Previously on Parks and Recreation Season 5 Episode 11 "Women In Garbage", In order to get more women hired in government, Leslie and April handle a garbage route. Meanwhile, to help his growing business, Tom enlists the help of Andy and Ben to teach him about basketball, and Ron is left to watch Diane's kids while their babysitter is out of town.
On this week's Episode title "Ann's Decision", After several unsuccessful relationships Ann makes a dramatic life decision. Ben enlists the help of Chris, Tom and Ron to choose a caterer for the wedding, while April has to handle one of Leslie's usual tasks.
Leslie Knope is a mid-level government employee who is trying to convert an abandoned construction pit into a usable community park. In her path are the typical defensive bureaucrats, selfish neighbors, real estate developers and single-issue fanatics determined to prevent her from doing any good in her community.
Leslie is helped, as well as undermined, by co-worker Tom Haverford, who routinely uses his position in the department for his own personal gain. Her boss Ron Swanson becomes a serious problem to the success of her project, in part due to his philosophical opposition to the government. City planner Mark Brendanawicz works with Leslie and Ann to help them navigate through the defensive bureaucrats and developers, but has been jaded by 15 years of working for the city of Pawnee.
Parks and Recreation is an American comedy television series on NBC led by Amy Poehler, who stars as Leslie Knope, a perky, mid-level bureaucrat in the parks department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. It was conceived by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur and debuted on April 9, 2009. The show has run for four seasons and a fifth has been commissioned for the 2012/13 season. It uses a single-camera, mockumentary filming style, with the implication being that a documentary crew is filming everyone. More recently, the Parks and Recreation staff has tried to differentiate their show from The Office through differences in filming technique, and decided in favor of multiple camera angles and frequent jump cuts.
The writers researched local California politics for the show, and consulted with urban planners and elected officials. The Leslie Knope character underwent minor changes after the first season in response to audience feedback that she seemed unintelligent and "ditzy". The writing staff tried to incorporate current events into their episodes, such as a government shutdown in Pawnee inspired by the real-life global financial crisis. Several guest stars have been featured in the show, and these characters often appear in multiple episodes.
Parks and Recreation received generally mixed reviews during its first season; many critics saw it as too similar to The Office. However, after a reapproach to its format and tone, its second and third seasons received much better critical reception. Since it was reformatted, Parks and Recreation has received several awards and nominations, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series and three Emmy nominations for Poehler's performance. The show also has a large online fan base devoted to the character Ron Swanson. Despite the critical acclaim, Parks and Recreation has struggled in the Nielsen ratings throughout its run on NBC.
In 2011, Parks and Recreation was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, and Amy Poehler received her second Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. In June 2011, Parks and Recreation was nominated for three of the inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The show itself was nominated for "Best Comedy Series", Amy Poehler was nominated for "Best Actress in a Comedy Series" and Nick Offerman was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series". Also that month, Parks and Recreation was nominated for four TCA Awards: Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy and Individual Achievement in Comedy awards for Offerman and Poehler. Offerman will also host the TCA Awards ceremony this year.
