December 2013 will see the release of the film Last Vegas, which stars Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Michael Douglas and it's already being labeled as the "old dudes version of The Hangover". If you ask me though, it looks like Fisher Stevens' Stand Up Guys already beat them to the punch. The structure is relatively similar, with the story taking place essentially over a 24-hour period that involves best friends Val (Al Pacino) and Doc (Christopher Walken) meeting assorted characters of an often nefarious variety and eventually teaming up with their old pal Hirsch (Alan Arkin) once they break him out of the retirement home he's living in. 

We open with Doc picking Val up as he's released from prison, and early on it's revealed that Doc has been given the order to execute his pal, being given until 10:00am the next morning to accomplish this task. Surprisingly, the script by Noah Haidle takes things in an unexpected direction, without the typical appeals for a way out or for any kind of emotionally manipulative sentiment. No, instead Stand Up Guys is just pure fun; an old-school comedy that gathers together three ace veteran actors and lets them play off one another while getting into various wild scenarios over the course of one wild night. The advertisements play up Arkin's part to be much bigger than it actually is, but the film really belongs to Pacino and Walken as they drive the entire thing. Arkin shows up and brings his always enjoyable presence for a bit, but ultimately it's just a blip on the overall scale of the outrageous night that Doc and Val have with one another.
